How to reach Thessaliniki
By air :
A number of flights are available daily, connecting the Thessaloniki International Airport “Macedonia”, Airport Code: SKG) with Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH) and various major European cities.
These flights are operated by Olympic Air, Aegean Airlines and Sky Express, and several international and low-cost carriers (such as EasyJet, and Wizz Air).
By train or intercity bus::
Thessaloniki is also connected to Athens and other major Greek cities by:
Intercity Bus (KTEL Macedonia): Located on the west side of the city (Giannitson Street), connecting Thessaloniki with almost every prefecture in Greece.
Train (Hellenic Train): Arriving at the New Railway Station of Thessaloniki (Monastiriou Street).
How to reach Thessaloniki Center
From the Airport:
Direct Bus Service: The airport is served by three public bus lines:
- Line 01X / 01N (Night): Connects the airport directly with the Thessaloniki city center, the New Railway Station, and KTEL Makedonia (the main intercity bus terminal).
- Line 079: Connects the airport with the Eastern Bus Transfer Station (IKEA).
- Line 02X: Connects the airport directly with the “Nea Elvetia” Metro Transfer Station.
Ticket Info & Location: The bus stop is located right outside the arrivals area. Tickets cost €2.00 and can be purchased either from the OASTH ticket booth at the airport or contactless by tapping your bank card or smartphone directly on the bus validating machines. By Taxi: The travel time to the city center is approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. The estimated fare ranges between €20–€25 (a double fare applies between 00:00 and 05:00). Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminals.
From the New Railway Station:
By Metro: Take the metro and get off at any central station (e.g., Venizelou, Agia Sofia). It takes only 5–7 minutes.
By Bus: The city center is accessible via multiple public bus lines running along Egnatia Street (Lines No 2K, 10, 14, etc.).
By Taxi: It takes about 10–15 minutes to reach central hotels and costs around €7 – €12.
From KTEL Macedonia (Central Intercity Bus Station):
By Taxi: It takes about 15–20 minutes to reach central hotels and costs around €12 – €17.
By Bus: The city center is accessible via public bus lines (Lines No 2K, 12, etc.).
How to reach KEDEA Building (Aristotle University’s Research Dissemination Center)
The KEDEA building is a distinct red building located downtown on 3rd Septemvriou Street(within the AUTH campus, between the Student Club and the University Gymnasium, opposite the University of Macedonia).
It can be reached:
- By metro (Recommended): From any metro station, take the train and get off at the “Panepistimio” stop. KEDEA is just a 3-minute walk from the station exit. Tickets: Metro tickets cost €0.60 and can be purchased at the automated vending machines inside the stations using cash, bank cards, or smartphones.
- By Taxi: It takes about 5–10 minutes from the heart of the city center (e.g., Aristotelous Square) and costs around €5 – €8. Please instruct the driver to take you to the “KEDEA building on 3rd Septemvriou Street, next to the AUTH Foititiki Leschi (Students’ Club)”.
- By bus:
- From the Airport: The fastest way by public transport is to take bus Line 02X to the “Nea Elvetia” Metro Station and then take the Metro directly to the “Panepistimio” stop. Alternatively, you can take Line 01X, get off at the “Kamara” stop in the center, and walk about 10 minutes to KEDEA.
- From the City Center (Egnatia Street): Take bus lines No 2K, 14, or 58 and get off at the “Panepistimio Makedonias” (University of Macedonia) stop. KEDEA is just a 2-minute walk from there.
- Alternative Lines: Lines No 17, 24, or 37 stop at the “Foititiki Leschi” (Students’ Club) stop, which is located right next to the KEDEA building.
Bus Tickets: Standard city bus tickets cost €0.60 if bought at a kiosk/booth. You can also pay contactless with your bank card/smartphone directly on the bus validating machine.
